What is TAP?

The Tertiary Alcohol Project is the only project of its kind in a Western Australian university setting.

It is a harm reduction project, with a number of unique, interactive strategies designed to reduce risk-taking behaviour associated with excessive alcohol consumption by university students.

Why the student population?

  • High prevalence of alcohol use among tertiary students
  • Risky drinking patterns
  • Increased likelihood of drinking and driving
  • Negative social effects of alcohol use
  • Alcohol is implicated in more than 40% of academic problems 1.
  • On average, students who drink the most, earn the lowest grades 1.
  • Alcohol use is commonly associated with students missing classes, doing poorly on tests or assignments & getting behind in university work 2.

The Tertiary Alcohol Project was developed and implemented with Healthway funding and is a project run by the UWA Medical Centre.
